At 6:42, Phil Colicchio — head basketball coach and guinea pig for a night — straps a black, coded chest belt under his shirt, positioning a tiny padded sensor over his heart. A half-hour before game time, his heart is beating 106 times a minute.

He heads to the locker room to lead a team meeting. As he maps his game plan on a green chalkboard, his heart rate rises to 121. He is 46, and the normal range for a man his age is in the mid-70s.

Soon, at courtside, he claps, sits, stands and leans in to talk with his Linden High School players once more. He shows no sweat. But at his sleeve, what looks like a wristwatch is picking up his electro-cardio signals, and the device doesn’t lie. His reading is at 114, and the game has not yet begun.

In sport, stress flows to the person in charge. This is an age-old idea. It is the coach’s lot. Increasingly, too, it is a concern for a profession grappling with its priorities, which rewards round-the-clock hours with instability and quicksilver firings and produces endemic burnout and other maladies.
